Artists Statement about the Art
A UFO Stole My Dingo
Decal glazed onto stoneware
Each year during the Margaret River Region Open Studios, Christian Fletcher invites artists to interpret one of his beautiful photographs. This is the statement that accompanied Myles’ artwork.
The idea of creating a ‘Willow Pattern’ dinner service is one that has piqued my interest for many years. This pattern is traditionally based on the ancient white porcelain that dates back to China over two and a half thousand years ago. First it was imported into England and through trial and error, British ceramic factories began their own version around the mid-1700’s.
The Willow Pattern is a love story and has specific features in their blue glaze – lovers, bridge, trees, pagoda. Over time, there have been other modern versions including the depiction of a contemporary landscape using alternative glaze colours.
Christian’s photograph of the old Dingo Flour Factory rising over Stirling, depicts an iconic landscape which many people are familiar with. This inspired a tie in with Christian’s unusual story of seeing UFO’s on a trip across the Nullabour, his passion for Star Wars and of course, a nod to his photography.
It’s only a short step to abstract to another iconic landscape and a dingo; and a tragic story.
Your truth is your truth.
